Storage Configuration Guidelines
You don’t have to be an expert to buy a storage server, but if you want to learn about how they work and what goes into customizing one for a specific workflow we are happy to share our approach! We can provide as much detail as you’d like during a consultation, but here are three of the major factors we consider:
Capacity
Storage is an investment, so it is important to consider your immediate needs and look to the future to estimate how much more capacity you may need over the coming years. This will give you the usable capacity you want to aim for. Working backward from there, taking into account drive space lost to redundancy, you can determine the raw capacity you need.
Redundancy
Data loss can be devastating, especially if you are responsible for your client’s data. Thankfully, modern approaches to redundancy give us several tools to protect information! Simple mirroring is ideal when only working with two drives. More complex parity configurations work well for larger arrays and can be combined with striping to improve speed as well.
Networking
It is critical to make sure your storage server can talk to the rest of the network it is on, and ideally at the maximum speed that network can support. This means installing a network adapter in the storage system that matches the type of infrastructure you have in place – while also considering any near-term upgrades your IT team may have planned.
