OS Installation

If you’ve ordered a computer from a large manufacturer in the past, you know how they load it up with trial software, advertisements, and promotional materials. This kind of “junkware” is not only annoying, but can even slow down your computer! At Puget, we install ONLY the software you order from us. All bundled software that comes with your hardware is still passed on to you, but we do not install anything you didn’t order. That leaves you with a completely clean installation!

What we WILL do is make sure you have the most up to date installation possible. Your motherboard BIOS is flashed to the most recent version. All Windows security patches and updates are applied. We use the latest stable drivers provided by the manufacturer of each part. From start to finish, we make sure your machine is using the most current software available!

Despite a delay caused by a shortage of AMD processors and a mistake by a supplier, I was very impressed by both the help I received in building the system and the response times to any questions I had.
When FedEx missed a delivery date and I contacted PCC about getting the shipping refunded From FedEx, they were extremely prompt and helpful.

Once I finally got my PC, I was blown away by the quality of the system, the sheer amount of parts and documentation included (a far cry from the ads and useless manuals that come from “big box” systems), and the performance of the PC.

Overall I would give Puget Custom Computers a 9.9/10, and I will certainly use them again.

The high marks you see for these guys are abolutely true and well-deserved. I have purchased dozens of computers over the years and dealing with PCC was a “ten” in every respect.

About three months ago I received my super-souped-up Dual Dual Core Opteron Workstation from Puget Systems.

I’ll keep this feedback short and to the point: don’t even bother with IBM, Dell, or HP. You’ll never see the kind of attention to detail in workmanship and manufacturing from an assembly line Tier 1, even for their top-of-the-line products.

Puget’s workmanship quality is top notch and the performance is phenomenal.

PCC, you did it again! My 2nd system from you, a Sager 9890 with all the goodies, is better than I could have imagined. I have to commend Richard who advised me to drop a few unnecessary extras and to add a 2nd internal HD (which by the way is not a feature available in your configuration menu). This is not a machine for lightweights! It has all the muscle I need for PremierPro video and Photoshop editing.

I researched other big name computer companies, but they couldn’t come close to the features and value of this system. Well done, guys!

Overall I’m pleased. From my first email (sent on a Sunday and got a response Sunday evening!) to any questions regarding my configuration I got quick responses and generally good answers. After the order was placed, things did change a little. I did have 1 problem that occurred twice. Upon receiving the system, I was unable to boot and got an error message saying “system failed memory test”. Paul walked through some trouble shooting with me over the phone (some things I had already tried, some I had not) and it was decided that either the CPU/heatsink had become unseated during shipping, or the motherboard was bad. I sent it back, and tracked the progress through the Puget website.

It was fixed the day it was received, retested and then sent out. I was disappointed that I had to request they send it to me using the faster shipping method I had paid for. There was no arguement from their end, but I figured it would be automatic that it would be shipped back to me at the same speed/via the same service which I had originally paid (twice the cost of ground) for.

Upon getting it the second time, the problem was still there. Same message. I called and talked to Paul, then called and left a message for Jon and got a call back from Paul again. I basically wanted a second opinion, but was unable to get ahold of Jon, when he had constantly been the person to reply to my initial emails. Felt somewhat like he was avoiding me now that there was a problem, but again, not a big deal.

Anyway, I was told that the shippers in my area must be very rough. When I sent the system back, they found that the heatsink (XP-120) had in fact been knocked loose (just slightly) during shipping. After Paul basically telling me that the options were to get it fixed locally (voiding Puget support) or sending it back in (which would probably get damaged again during shipping) I stewed for a couple days about what to do. I’ve built some systems before, but Paul reiterated many times that he would recommend I not try to fix it myself. Ultimately, I did fix it myself and it works fine. One of the 4 clips that holds the heatsink in place wasn’t totally snapped into place and just had to be guided into place with a flathead screwdriver and some downward pressure. Very simple fix, but I guess in the name of not having someone work on the system themselves (not fully knowing their skill level), Puget prefers to pay shipping rather than risk someone breaking anything. Again, understandable, but frustrating. It is a somewhat intimidating looking heatsink compared to most, but generally, the same installation steps.

Since fixing that problem, it has run mostly fine. The only hiccups have been minor hardware conflicts. My router causes some little annoyances when connected to one of the two network adapters on the motherboard
(disconnecting but easy to reconnect). It works great through the other one though. Other than that, it has worked just fine.

I do feel the prices are a bit steep. I was planning on building my own system, but didn’t know when I was going to have the time to devote to building/testing a new system. So, I opted to go with Puget since they mostly had the parts I wanted and had very good reviews regardless of where I looked. Building the same system myself, I would have been able to save about $500 – $700. Seems like a bit much considering the extra payment was basically to save myself build/testing time -but I knew the cost before I ordered, it just hits harder in hindsight due to having to send it back, and ultimately fix the problem myself anyway.
