The following is entirely based on my personal experiences with our Puget Mobile 17″ Workstation and other Puget hardware. For a list of Puget Systems recommended devices see our dedicated Peripherals page
Essential Peripherals
I’ve been using my Puget Mobile 17-inch workstation for a while now and I’ve found a few items that have made my life a lot easier and improved my workflow. I’ll provide some of the devices I’ve used that I’ve enjoyed.
A good mouse can really improve your mobile work setup. The Anker Wireless Vertical Mouse has an unusual upright design that might help with wrist strain during long editing sessions. If you prefer something more traditional, a regular wireless mouse works great for detailed tasks or just browsing the web.
For your Puget Mobile 17-inch workstation, picking the right keyboard matters. While a wireless keyboard and mouse combo is fine for casual use, wired mechanical keyboards are great for lots of typing. Cherry MX mechanical switches with gold contacts last a long time and perform consistently.
Don’t forget about audio. Logitech G733 headphones are a solid choice. They’re light, have great sound, and are comfy for long wear. Quality headphones can help you focus in noisy places or avoid bothering others in shared spaces.
Lastly, a comfy chair is super important, especially if you sit a lot. An adjustable mesh office chair can help you stay comfy and focused on your work instead of feeling achy. My personal preference after several years is still the IKEA MARKUS. It’s insanely comfortable, easily adjustable to several positions and has a tall back which is hard to find for us taller folk. This one does not have the ergonomic features that others do but I still have enjoyed it a great deal.
These extras can really make your workstation better, kind of like how jelly makes a PB&J sandwich complete – they just make everything work better together.
External Storage Solutions
The right external storage can really boost what your Puget workstation can do, whether you’re working with big video files or tons of high-res photos.
Solid-State Drives (SSDs)
- Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD: Super fast and reliable with fingerprint security
- SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD: Even faster, with efficient cooling and carry loop
High-Capacity Options
- Western Digital 20TB External Hard Drive: Massive storage, reliable performance
- G-Technology G-DRIVE: Balance of speed and capacity
Specialized Solutions
- OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual mini: Dual-drive flexibility for speed or backup
- LaCie Rugged SSD Pro: Durable, fast, ideal for on-the-go work
These storage options are like giving your Puget Mobile workstation superpowers. They help you handle any kind of data job smoothly, no matter where you are.
Having additional external storage for photography and video editing workflows is imperative since high resolution media can end up consuming significant amounts of storage.
Choose the right storage solution, and you’ll never be caught short on space or speed again.
Docking Stations and Hubs
Docking stations and hubs can really expand what your Puget workstation can do, letting you plug in all sorts of stuff easily.
The right dock or hub keeps everything running smoothly. Whether you’re editing videos, designing graphics, or crunching numbers, these add-ons ensure your Puget Mobile setup can handle whatever you throw at it.
Top Picks for Docking Stations and Hubs
- Plugable 16-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Dock: Versatile, supports up to four 4K screens (my current hub). Found it to be very reliable for months and has a ton of connectivity
- CalDigit TS3 Plus: Compact powerhouse with numerous ports
- Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Portable, perfect for travel
- OWC Thunderbolt Hub: Cross-platform compatibility, ideal for Thunderbolt devices
- Targus Universal USB 3.0 DV Docking Station: Great for networking needs
- Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Mini: Small form factor with essential ports
Any of the above can turn your Puget Mobile workstation into a super-efficient workspace. They keep everything connected and ready to go, so you can focus on your work without worrying about cables and connections.
With these add-ons, your Puget Mobile setup can handle whatever you throw at it.
You can work anywhere and still have all the power and flexibility you need to do your best work.
Ergonomic Accessories
In the daily grind of work life, comfort isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially when you’re immersed in projects on a powerhouse like our mobile workstation. Ergonomic accessories can transform long hours of work into a more pleasant and less taxing experience.
Laptop Stands
- Roost Laptop Stand: Popular for its portable, lightweight design. Brings your screen to eye level, reducing neck and shoulder strain and is just so freakin neat!
- Rain Design mStand: Made from a single piece of aluminum, it’s stable and sleek. Supports your laptop and improves airflow.
An adjustable height keyboard tray can be a game changer. The Fellowes Office Suites Underdesk Keyboard Drawer frees up desktop space while letting you set the keyboard at a comfortable height. A wrist rest, like the Kensington Duo Gel, provides cushioned support during long typing sessions.
Ergonomic Chairs
I really love my IKEA Markus but it doesn’t possess the ergonomics many people desire. Here are some other options I considered:
- Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair: Fully adjustable – from lumbar support to seat depth. Features breathable mesh fabric.
- Hbada Reclining Office Desk Chair: Budget-friendly option with good support and a retractable footrest which is neat.
Standing desks are gaining popularity (and for good reason). Personally my setup does not accommodate one but there are several great options. The Varidesk Pro Plus 36 allows you to easily switch between sitting and standing, which can help alleviate back pain and boost circulation. To complement a standing setup, an anti-fatigue mat like the ComfiLife Anti-Fatigue Floor Mat can make standing tasks more comfortable over time.
As someone who cares about the environment, it’s worth noting that many of these ergonomic brands prioritize sustainable materials and production practices. So you can work comfortably while supporting eco-friendly initiatives.
These ergonomic accessories, combined with the performance of your Puget Mobile 17-inch workstation, can lead to a truly harmonious work experience. They adapt to your body’s needs, helping you stay comfortable, efficient, and pain-free, so you can focus on what really matters: your passion and creativity.
Networking and Connectivity
Good networking and connectivity can make all the difference when you’re in the zone on your Puget Mobile 17-inch workstation. Let’s look at some accessories that can keep you smoothly connected to the digital world.
Routers and WiFi Systems
- NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart Wi-Fi Router: This is my current system; it has been incredibly reliable, easy to manage and extremely fast. Offers speeds up to 9.3Gbps with WiFi 6 support. Can handle up to 200 devices.
- TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi System: Creates a consistent WiFi blanket over your entire space, eliminating dead spots. Phenomenal for larger workspaces/homes.
Tips for Optimal Connectivity
- Position your router in a central, elevated spot
- Perform regular firmware updates to router/modem to enhance performance and security
- Use range extenders like the TP-Link AC2600 WiFi Extender for larger spaces
- Consider wired connections for tasks requiring maximum reliability
Lastly, network management tools like NetSpot or WiFi Analyzer can help you identify weak spots and optimize your setup. These tools are great for getting the most out of your WiFi, keeping all your devices running smoothly.
Reliable networking and connectivity not only boosts your productivity but ensures you stay seamlessly connected to your digital world.
With these accessories and tips, you can overcome connectivity hurdles and keep your work flowing smoothly, no matter where you are.
Conclusion
Many of these items can also be found on our Puget Systems Recommended Peripherals page. While these are just my favorites and my experience, they’re all ones that I’ve had a chance to test with a Puget device and know how they operate.
The right peripherals and accessories can transform your Puget Mobile 17-inch workstation into a powerhouse of productivity and comfort. By investing in these tools, you’re creating an environment where creativity and efficiency thrive. Here’s to making every project a little smoother and every workday a bit more enjoyable.
